Paralleling My Society to the Giver
In our Humanities class we are focusing about a book called "The Giver" by S.E Sinton, parallels real events that are happening all over the world. There are many examples of texts that parallels the book " The Giver" and our society. Some of these examples are Snowden, Incarceration, Banned Books and also the last example a song called Muse. All of these texts have strong evidence of how the Giver society parallels our society. Both of "The Giver" , three articles ( Snowden, Incarceration and the last article banned books) and the song Muse all have the same thing in common which is sameness, control, secrets, surveillance and whistleblower.
The article about Edwin Snowden spreads secrets parallels the book "The Giver". Both of these situations involve secrets. They both keep secrets to keep the world "better". In "The Giver" they want to keep the truth away from the citizens and in America they keep secrets away from us to "protect" us like how they go through our bills, records of our phone calls, emails, etc. Another example is that they both surveillance their citizens. In the paragraph it talks about how the U.S records and listens to people's conservation while talking to somebody on the phone. My last example to support my main idea is that they both parallel by both societies have a whistleblower. Whistleblowers are people who inform a person or people or an organizations that are engaged in an illicit activity. They both have whistleblowers by 12 years old Jonas wanting to tell people the truth and a guy named Edwin Snowden who believes people should have a right to know. Overall both societies parallel by secrets, surveillance and by having whistleblowers.
In this paragraph I discuss the article Incarceration, incarcerating ( put in chains, hold prisoner, hold captive) the population of the U.S and the comparison of "The Giver". They both parallel by wanting to control. One example by both societies making people who they are not. Another example is that in "The Giver" they would give you a job that you may not like, a random person to marry even if you do not love them and make you have 2 children, and in prison they make you do stuff and control you. In general i think both societies parallels by control.
This article Arizona's 'Banned" Mexican-American Books parallels " The Giver" by they both want sameness. One reason to support my main idea is according to www.theguardian.com a opponent from the MAS program named Lupita Garcia who is a administrator, oversees the district ethnic studies programs told the students that racism has nothing to do with color and that Mexico is where Mexican studies is taught, not America! Another reason is that when students asked administrators why didn't European and other studies get banned or discipline their response was nothing. According to this newspaper clearly one of the administrators believed that Mexican-American shouldn't and don't belong in America. In conclude this article and "The Giver" parallel by both societies want sameness from everybody
This song Muse parallels "The Giver" by they both hide secrets from the public. My first example is that the lyrics it says " They'll try to push drugs that keeps us all dumped down." This parallels "The Giver" by they're both telling lies like for example, when they say they're going to release someone they actually drug the person to sleep and they'll make the workers ( who put the person to sleep) not know anything that they're doing. Another example is that from the lyrics it says " and hopes we will never see the truth around" which parallels "The Giver" by saying that they don't want anybody to know the truth and they will do anything to keep it like that. My last and finale example is that they both want people to think that the city is a utopia once it's covered with lies. Overall the song Muse parallels "The Giver" by they both hide secrets from the public and will want to keep it like that.
